Island Park & Wildlife Sanctuary
A Fun Nature Park located on an Large Island
A large island located in the thunder bay river with many fishing platforms and paved trails as well as rustic trails for hiking and picnic tables and benches. A varity of wildlife is present on the island as well as a variety of great scenery. The island is surronded by a Wildlife Preserve so the wildlife will be sure to impress.
Site: AWS is easily accessible off US 23. Parts of Duck, Island and Sytek Parks are ADA compliant as are the restrooms at Duck Park. The 440 acre marsh can be viewed from the wheel chair accessible path leading to the top of Island Park. In season kayaks/canoes can be rented from a private business in Duck Park and a public kayak/canoe launch is at Sytek Park allowing further exploration of the marsh and the river itself.
Sytek Park on Bagley St. enables birders to walk the ADA Bi-Path along the river through the cemetery and along the river.
Birding: Trumpeter swans, pied-bill grebes, mallards, many diving ducks, great egrets, great blue herons, loons, occasional sandhill cranes, spring and fall migrating warblers, redstarts and other passerines can be seen.
