Nature Preserve Saganing
The 38-acre Saganing Nature Preserve is home to a dense woodland area and the delta wetland of the Saganing River, which can be accessed on foot from the Preserve parking area. The southern half of this Preserve is a very thick, wetland habitat with no established trails. Primarily held to help increase water quality by filtering stormwater runoff before it enters Saginaw Bay, the Saganing Nature Preserve’s delta wetland habitat is also an important sanctuary for migratory birds and wetland plants and animals. The Preserve does have a rustic trail extending from the parking area out along the Saganing River, but it is seasonal and not well-established, so proceed with caution. Saganing Nature Preserve is perhaps best enjoyed in winter, especially for aficionados of skiing and snowshoeing. Recreational opportunities include hiking, wildlife observations, skiing, snowshoeing and fishing.
General purposes for the preserves are:
Preserve the conservation values in a predominately natural state in perpetuity
Provide a nature area that is open to the public for educational and recreational use.
Eliminate or reduce as much as possible existing or future impairments to the scenic landscape and natural character.
Preserve in an undisturbed state any historical or archeological features.
Provide a natural home to many species of wildlife.
Protect to the extent practical the diversity of plant species found at the site from invasive species and human disturbance
Preserves are monitored by a regular visit a minimum of every 3 months by members of the conservancy board, staff or other volunteers. It is our responsibility to ensure that the conservation purposes are achieved.
Preserve Rules
Open during daylight (dawn to dusk)
No overnight camping
No campfires/smoking
No motorized vehicles
No littering/dumping debris
No disturbance or removal of vegetation except as part of a Conservancy management plan
